LONDON – Austrian Airlines has this week (Sept 6) announced a significant expansion to their 2018/19 Winter Schedule.

There will be more than 40 additional flights each week to 14 different European destinations as well as 30 additional flights to North America per week.

Commenting on this new timetable is Austrian’s Chief Commercial Officer, Andreas Otto.

“Alongside the European flights, we are increasing our frequencies to North America as well.

As a result, we are strengthening Vienna as a hub for our flights.”

North America and Tel Aviv…

The carrier will be increasing services to New York to 13 weekly, which is an increase of six weekly flights compared to the last schedule.

The airline will be adding two more weekly connections to their Chicago route, thus bringing it to daily.

One additional flight will also be added to the Toronto rotation, bringing the total frequency count to five weekly.

Tel Aviv is important to Austrian’s North American strategy. Passengers who want to travel between North America and Israel via Vienna can now choose up to 21 weekly flight connections starting at the end of October this year. 

Focus on Germany, Denmark and Greece…

By the end of October 2018, Austrian Airlines will offer 238 weekly flights from Vienna to Germany.

Up to 48 weekly flights will operate to Berlin-Tegel, 36 to Dusseldorf and 29 to Hamburg for a total of 17 additional weekly flights on a frequency-increased basis.

In the Danish market, the carrier will be flying up to 30 times per week to Copenhagen at the end of October 2018.

This is an exponential increase compared to the last schedule when the carrier only operated four weekly flights.

A Strengthening Look at Eastern Europe…

Finally, the carrier will be serving Kiev up to 16 times per week in the upcoming schedule.

This means that Austrian Airlines will offer up to 30 weekly flight connections to destinations throughout Ukraine.

A total of 63 weekly flights will be operated to Kosice, Budapest, Belgrade, and Sarajevo collectively.

Warsaw will see an expansion, offering up to 13 weekly flights as well as 18 weekly flights to Krakow.

Romania is a big focus for Austrian too, with the carrier offering up to 41 flights per week from the likes of Bucharest, Iasi, and Sibiu.

Bulgaria is also being hit hard with increased frequencies, with Austrian to operate 29 weekly flights to the capital, Sofia as well as the Varna service being upgraded to daily overall.

New Route…

Within this Winter schedule comes a brand new route.

The carrier will be operating services direct from Vienna to Cape Town on a twice-weekly basis from October 27.

It is likely that this service will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 777 aircraft, which currently sit 48 people in Business as well as 260 people in Economy.

In all, this is a huge expansion from Austrian Airlines. The carrier is placing a lot of investment into routes that they had not operated a lot of in the last schedule.

It will be interesting in particular to see how the Copenhagen service will fare, especially with the increase of 26 weekly flights to the Danish capital.
