Air France Presents New Premium Economy, Coach Cabins (+Photos)

MIAMI — Air France has introduced to the world its new Economy and Premium Economy cabins, which will be installed onboard its 15 Airbus A330-200s starting from January 2019.

“Today we are celebrating the arrival of our new products and services in our Economy and Premium Economy long-haul cabins, for an even more comfortable and relaxing travel experience,” said Anne Rigail, EVP Customer at Air France.

Currently, Air France boasts a fleet of 208 aircraft, of which its 15 A330s have been flying for 16 years on long-haul missions.

The new design is a welcome news for frequent fliers who fly on these planes with regularity. Together with the eldest Boeing 777-200(ER)s in the airline’s fleet—the A330s are in desperate need of a cabin facelift.

“With a further investment of 150 million euros in the cabins of our A330s, this is a major step in our overall strategy to move upmarket, a strategy that has been underway since 2014 and which will result in our 15 Airbus A330s being equipped as from 2019,” Rigail added.

The new design adds a new dimension to the currently dated and worn cabins.

As described by our partner website, TheDesignAir, in Economy Class the seat is being upgraded to provide more comfort with more space between the armrests a reinforced ergonomic foam in the seat and a 118° recline; a 31″ seat pitch; a larger tray table and a wider, latest generation 11.7-inch (29.8 cm) 16:9 touchscreen.

Jonny Clark, the executive editor at TDA, notes that a deep blue monochrome fabric signed with the accent, the symbol of the Air France brand, adorns the new cabin cushions and headrests.

“But the headrests and cushions offer a wealth of blue tones that bring the cabin to life. Offsetting this and adding drama is a new bright red blanket – the company’s iconic accent shade – as well as collectible night masks, inspired by the company’s destinations, are also available,” Clark writes.

Each seat comes with power outlets and passengers can take advantage of all-new WiFi connection, which is being progressively installed on all Air France planes. Currently, the A330s in Air France’s fleet do not offer any kind of connectivity.

The New Premium Economy

As explained by TDA, Air France had already upgraded its Premium Economy product on its new Boeing 787-9s.

“There is still the 130° seat recline within the fixed shell offer one of the widest seats at 19 inches and a generous 40″ seat pitch,” Clark notes. “The softer seat cushions and wider leather armrests have also been redesigned.”

In the upgraded Premium Economy, passengers will be handed a red pillow and a deep blue blanket, as well as an amenity kit that will be updated every six months, according to Air France.

On top of the upgraded seat, each Premium Economy passenger will also be offered a complimentary glass of Champagne in a newly designed glass.

Moreover, all meals on this cabin will be served in a new collection of powder-colored tableware on a black background and eco-designed in collaboration with Eugeni Quitllet.

Also, TheDesignAir notes that on flights lasting between 8 hours 30 minutes and 10 hours 30 minutes, customers are offered a Bon Appétit breakfast bag containing delicious snacks to take with them or to eat on board. On arrival at the destination, customers receive a French-style candy, as a little gesture to say “thank you for traveling with us.”

What About Business Class?

Next month, Air France will also unveil its all-new Business Class that will complement the product that was presented today.

There’s broad speculation that the new Business Class seats will also be installed on the Airbus A380. However, Air France has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors.

Stay tuned, as Airways will be present at the unveiling event in Paris next month.
