MIAMI — The final AirTran Airways flight is quickly approaching as it continues to integrate with Southwest Airlines.
Tomorrow, the carriers will announce that they have extended their schedules through January 4, 2015. This will be the last time that AirTran will be on the schedule.
Final AirTran Flights
Dayton, Louisville, and Norfolk will see its last AirTran flights on June 7, 2014.
The carrier will operate its final flights to Aruba and Montego Bay from Atlanta on June 30, 2014.
On August 9, 2014, the carrier will operate its final flights from Atlanta to Austin, Cancun, Columbus, Nassau, New York LaGuardia, Oklahoma City, and Richmond
On October 6, 2014, AirTran will operate its final flights between Denver and Atlanta.
The carrier will operate its final flights to the following on November 1, 2014: Akron/Canton, Hartford, Los Angeles, Punta Cana, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Washington Regan.
Las Vegas will see its last AirTran flight on November 30, 2014.
The carrier will operate its final flights to the following cities on December 28, 2014: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago-Midway, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Houston-Hobby, Indianapolis, Jacksonville (FL), Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh/Durham, St. Louis, Tampa.

The carrier will operate its final flight from Atlanta to Tampa as AirTran Flight 1 (or Southwest 5001). The flight is scheduled to depart at 10:25 PM EDT, and it is scheduled to arrive into Tampa at 11:55 PM EDT.
Ironically, AirTran’s last flight will be on the same route that ValuJet inaugurated service on which occurred on October 26, 1993. It was flight 001 from Atlanta to Tampa with a DC-9. ValuJet acquired Airways Corporation, Inc. which was the holding company for AirTran Airways, Inc. on November 17, 1997.
For AirTran Flight Attendants and Pilots who have a layover overnight on December 28, it has been unofficially reported that they return to their domicile on scheduled Southwest flights or by ferry flight.
It has also been unofficially reported that 36 of AirTran’s 88 717s are have been transferred to Delta, and the rest of the 717 fleet will be officially retired on December 28, 2014 (except for an occasional ferry flight).
Additionally, 23 of AirTran’s 52 Boeing 737-700s have been or in the process of being converted into Southwest’s configuration. Sources say that the AirTran subsidiary plans to stop flying the 737s around December 1, 2014.
AirTran pilots have already started training with Southwest, and training will continue through 2015. It has also been reported that it will take a few months to train all of the pilots as Southwest cannot handle training all 717 pilots at one time.
Flight Attendants have already begun training as the carrier’s flying continues to wind down, and training will continue into early next year.
