ULCC Wizz Air Opens New Bucharest Baneasa Base

DALLAS — European Ultra-Low-Cost carrier (ULCC) Wizz Air (W6) has opened a second base in the Romanian capital, with a new Airbus A321neo. Meanwhile, W6 will deploy an additional aircraft at Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) from August 1.

These developments aim to increase connectivity between Romania and other destinations. The ULCC plans to continue its rapid expansion in Romania with these new aircraft while providing more smart travel options with additional seats for this summer season. It will add over 910,000 seats to W6’s summer 2025 schedule in BUH. This represents a growth of 22% for BUH compared with the same period last year.

“With a 51% market share in Romania, we are looking forward to expanding our network and start operating today a new base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport. Operating 67 routes across 22 countries from both Bucharest airports, we continue to grow under our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy, supporting the Romanian economy and the local job market, as well as strengthening our position as the country’s leading airline.” Mauro Peneda, General Manager of Wizz Air Malta, said.

Expanded Bucharest Operations

W6 will offer additional services from BBU to Naples (NAP), Kraków (KRK), Abu Dhabi (UAH), Budapest (BUD), and London Luton (LTN), which is already operational. W6 will also introduce services on two Polish routes from BBU, flying to Warsaw (WAW) starting June 8 and to Wroclaw (WRO) beginning December 6.

Additionally, with the new aircraft based at OTP, W6 will launch three new routes this summer. It will offer flights to Gran Canaria (LPA) starting June 17, to Frankfurt Hahn (HHN) from August 1, and to Friedrichshafen (FDH) on August 2. W6 will also enhance frequencies on nine existing routes to Dortmund (DTM), Memmingen (FMM), Stuttgart (STR), Nice (NCE), Basel (MLH), Madrid (MAD), Malaga (AGP), Lyon (LYS), and Pisa (PSA).
