WestJet Acquires Three More Boeing  737-8 Aircraft

DALLAS — The WestJet Group (WS) has announced its acquisition of three more Boeing 737-8 aircraft sourced from SMBC Aviation Capital. This recent addition follows the airline’s earlier purchase of six over the summer, bringing the total number of new acquisitions to nine in just six months.

Mike Scott, WestJet’s Executive Vice President and CFO, expressed excitement about the continued collaboration with SMBC. This highlights the airline's commitment to expanding its fleet and offering affordable air travel options.

WestJet says these leased aircraft will help mitigate delays in factory deliveries, allowing the airline to sustain its growth strategy and enhance air connectivity across its expanding network.

SMBC Aviation Capital’s Chief Commercial Officer, Barry Flannery, emphasized the importance of these fuel-efficient aircraft in supporting WestJet’s expansion and reaffirmed the company's long-standing partnership with the airline.

While the additional capacity will benefit WestJet's guests, the new aircraft will not immediately feature the airline’s signature interior cabin design. WestJet has plans to update the cabins as part of its ongoing fleet reconfiguration to ensure a consistent onboard experience.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
