Lilium GmbH, a developer of all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jets, has announced a firm order of 20 Lilium Jets from U.S. operator UrbanLink. The agreement also includes an option for an additional 20 jets.
This order makes UrbanLink as the first airline in the U.S. to fully commit to integrating eVTOL aircraft into its fleet. UrbanLink plans to begin operations with a regional network connecting cities in South Florida. The partnership marks milestone in advancing the adoption of advanced air mobility (AAM) in the region. The service launch is targeted for 2026.
UrbanLink's purchase order includes scheduled pre-delivery payments. The airline has chosen the Lilium Jet for its superior cabin design, range, capacity, and cost-effectiveness. Ed Wegel, the CEO of UrbanLink, expressed his dedication to revolutionizing urban transportation and highlighted the Lilium Jet as the optimal choice for their needs.
As an airline entrepreneur and former GlobalX boss, Wegel established Air Flo, an airline focused on operating Airbus A220 aircraft to serve the former Air Florida short-haul route network. In addition to Air Flo, Wegel launched UrbanLink, which will operate under Part 135 regulations.
The Lillium Jet
The Lilium Jet is a five-seat aircraft capable of achieving a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 300 km. Lilium aims to provide sustainable and accessible high-speed transportation with zero operating emissions.
The order from UrbanLink follows Lilium's start of assembly of the first Lilium Jet at the end of last year. The company has also begun installing a serial production line for the propulsion units of the jets. The first prototype propulsion units are expected to come off the line in the second quarter of 2024.
Lilium's partnership with UrbanLink is part of their broader efforts to commercialize eVTOLs and promote regional air mobility. The company has been working on the development of the Lilium Jet and plans to conduct the first piloted flight test in late 2024.
