DALLAS — Entebbe-based (EBB) Uganda Airlines (UR) will commence scheduled services to the British capital in May. The airline will offer four flights a week between EBB and London Gatwick Airport (LGW), operated with an Airbus A330-800 aircraft. UR’s fleet comprises two A330-800s and four CRJ900s.
The airline had hoped to launch the route last year, but the start date was delayed due to various setbacks. According to Sustainability in the Sky, the commencement date for this route has now been set for May 18.
“I’m elated and excited to announce the dates for the long-awaited direct flights to London by Uganda Airlines. This route marks the end of our establishment phase and sets us on a course for long-term growth and expansion.” Jenifer Bamuturaki, Uganda Airlines CEO, said.
Uganda Airlines Route Expansion
The new service becomes UR’s third intercontinental route and the seventeenth in its growing network. Uganda Airlines flies to Dubai (DXB) and Mumbai (BOM) outside the African continent.
This new route represents Uganda Airlines' first foray into Europe and re-establishes a direct connection between EBB and the United Kingdom after nearly a decade. The introduction of the service also underscores UR’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering stronger ties between Uganda and the United Kingdom.
The EBB-LGW route already has significant passenger loads but lacks a direct service. Data shows that 90,000 passengers per year travel between London and Entebbe. Therefore, the launch of the route will shorten the travel time between EBB and LON from 16 hours to 9 hours by avoiding the need to fly via other hubs.
