Spirit's 10th Pilot Crew Base at Newark Liberty Airport

Spirit Airlines (NK) has unveiled plans to open its 10th crew base for pilots at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in September 2024.

This move is part of the airline's efforts to enhance operational reliability and improve its services. Initially, approximately 200 pilots will be located at the Newark crew base, with additional supervisors and support functions to follow.

Strategic Location and Flight Schedule

Newark Liberty International Airport is strategically located within NK's network and has a substantial flight schedule, making it an ideal choice for the new pilot crew base. If you happen to fly to NWR on a budget, chances are you'll arrive at Terminal B, which is usually packed with NK passengers.

Spirit has become the second-largest carrier at EWR, offering up to 32 peak day departures and serving 22 destinations, including seven destinations added in the past year. The airline first launched service at EWR in October 2016.

Complementing Existing Crew Bases

The new crew base at Newark will complement Spirit Airlines' existing crew bases in Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood (FLL), Houston (IAH), Las Vegas (LAS), Miami (MIA), and Orlando (MCO).

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
