Spirit Expands Its Chattanooga Network Eastward

DALLAS — Spirit Airlines (NK) will expand its Tennessee offering by launching three new nonstops from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA). 

Starting June 2025, Fort Lauderdale (FLL) will have service three times a week (June 5), while Newark (EWR) and Orlando (MCO) will each offer four weekly flights (June 4). These routes will serve as the city's only nonstop service to these East Coast destinations.

Strengthening Chattanooga’s Air Connectivity

Spirit's new service is a significant milestone for CHA's efforts to increase air connectivity to domestic markets. These nonstops will give the city access to South Florida, the New York metro area, and Central Florida.

John Kirby, the Vice President, Network Planning, emphasized the strategic significance of this expansion:

“We are thrilled to add our CHA guests to our roster as we strengthen our Tennessee network and kick off three new nonstop routes in time for a fun summer getaway. Chattanooga has earned its title as the Scenic City, and travelers from several major East Coast cities can explore a new destination that’s brimming with southern hospitality, stunning landscapes, and unlimited outdoor activities.”

The shift makes NK a direct competitor in Chattanooga’s air service market, taking on legacy carriers serving larger connectors like Atlanta (ATL) and Nashville (BNA). NK’s low-cost model has worked well in secondary markets, where it can stimulate demand with new nonstop services.

The addition of CHA marks Spirit's third Tennessee destination, following Nashville (BNA) in 2019 and Memphis (MEM) in 2022. 

A Competitive Market and Strategic Expansion

Chattanooga has been chasing more of the air service, as regional airlines have been cutting back on service because of, in some cases, pilot shortages or fleet limitations. NK's entrance into the market was limited, and previously, its only direct flight for access to leisure destinations was FLL. 

Still, now it reduces reliance on FLL as a primary destination for those looking to connect to more cities via its FLL/EWR/MCO hubs and, more importantly, high-volume leisure destinations.

This is in conjunction with a growing trend across U.S. aviation, where low-cost carriers (LCCs) are filling an unmet demand for flights in underserved secondary markets. NK’s expansion follows similar moves from rivals like Allegiant (G4) and Frontier (F9), which have both rapidly expanded their networks to smaller U.S. airports.

The announced new NK nonstops are expected to boost outbound and inbound passenger traffic for Chattanooga, potentially leading to further service expansion if the initial routes meet Spirit's performance targets.
