Spirit Airlines to Serve Alabama for the First Time

DALLAS — This fall, ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Spirit Airlines (NK) will launch daily flights from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

On October 10, NK will debut the only nonstop flight from BHM to FLL, the first time the ULCC serves the state of Alabama. The daily services includes the carrier's new no change or cancel fee and an increased checked bag weight allowance to 50 pounds.

Remarks from Spirit Airlines, Birmingham Airport Authority

"We can't wait to welcome aboard Birmingham travelers looking for both an affordable and convenient way to enjoy Fort Lauderdale's beautiful beaches," said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines.

"Our new daily service will make flying to Fort Lauderdale more accessible and will provide an attractive alternative to driving. It will also make it easier for our Florida Guests to enjoy Birmingham's southern hospitality."

"This is a great day for our community," said Darlene Wilson, Vice-Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority Board. "Spirit Airlines is showing a tremendous amount of confidence in this market, and we are thrilled to have this new option available to travelers."

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
