DALLAS — Ryanair (FR) has introduced a membership scheme that could save passengers money if they fly frequently.
The Ultra Low-Cost Carrier (ULCC) has launched its new Prime membership scheme, costing GBP 79 per year. The FR program offers benefits for passengers who frequent its flights. It is aimed at passengers who fly more than 12 times a year.
"Ryanair has been delivering the lowest fares (and the best services) in Europe for the last four decades, and we’re now extending our price leadership with the launch of our exciting new subscriber discount scheme, Ryanair Prime,” FR CMO, Dara Brady, said.
The airline's Prime membership scheme allows members who fly 12 times a year to save on hidden fees, such as reserved seats and travel insurance. Members are also granted access to exclusive seat sales, giving them the best prices on flights throughout the year.
According to thesun.ie, Prime members who fly 12 times yearly could save up to GBP 420 annually, which is five times more than the yearly membership fee.
That said, the scheme is not only designed for passengers who fly twelve times a year. Passengers who fly less frequently can still benefit. Members who fly with FR thrice a year can save £105 through Prime membership.
Budget Airline Membership Schemes
Ryanair is not the first budget airline in Europe to introduce a membership scheme. Wizz Air (W6) launched one in August last year. W6’s membership scheme, All You Can Fly, allows members to take advantage of unlimited flights all year long.
Due to popular demand, W6 expanded the scheme by 15,000 members just a few months later. However, W6’s membership scheme costs significantly more: GBP 500 per year.
Ryanair’s Prime membership is limited to 250,000 members who sign up on a first-come, first-served basis via the airline's website.
