DALLAS — Royal Brunei Airlines (BI) is set to resume commercial flights to India after a 20-year hiatus. The national carrier of Brunei will begin flights to Chennai International Airport (MAA) from Brunei International Airport (BWN) on November 5, 2024 as part of its network expansion.

An Airbus A320 will connect the two cities three times a week, with flights departing BWN at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays as BI121 and returning from MAA at 11:50 p.m. on Thursdays as BI122. However, BI121 will depart BWN on Saturdays at 12:30 a.m., with the return flight, BI122, leaving MAA at 4:20 a.m.

The aircraft is configured with 12 Business Class seats and 138 Economy Class seats, including 16 Preferred seats with a 32-inch seat pitch, 12 Extra Legroom seats, and 2 Bassinet seats.

Previously, BI operated flights to Kolkata (CCU) until the end of 2004 and flew to India as chartered flights during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Royal Brunei Airlines fleet consists of 7 Airbus A320neos and 5 Boeing 787-8s, mainly serving destinations in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom.

The airline recently ordered four Boeing 787-9s during the Singapore Air Show 2024 to support its network expansion and enhance passenger comfort.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes.
