Porter Inaugurates Toronto-Phoenix Nonstop Route

DALLAS — Toronto-based Porter Airlines (PD) inaugurates another new destination in the US today, October 3, 2024, with the launch of new nonstop service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

The airline will operate the route with a flight time exceeding four hours using its E195-E2 aircraft. The aircraft is arranged in a 2-2 configuration and can seat up to 132 passengers.

Airways was present at PHX to capture the moment of arrival of the Embraer E195-E2 jet, registration C-GKQR, marking the completion of the first flight to Arizona for the Canadian carrier. It is the first time an E-Jet E2 lands at PHX.

Toronto-Phoenix Flight Schedule

  • The Southbound flight departs YYZ at 10.30 and arrives in PHX at 12.01
  • The Northbound flight departs PHX at 13.05 and arrives in YYZ at 20.21

The E195-E2 is known for fuel efficiency and a reduced environmental impact, thus reducing airline costs. That said, PD’s fleet is comprised of Embraer jets and De Havilland Dash 8 aircraft. The latter is used to service shorter routes but rarely for cross-border flights.

Comments from Airline, City Officials

Porter Airlines president Kevin Jackson said, “Phoenix is another exciting step in our growth and the latest proof of our commitment to making flying better across the continent."

The airline president also noted that today's inaugural flight from Toronto to Phoenix built "on Porter's growing Western U.S. presence." PD already flies to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Diego and San Francisco.

Jackson added that the airline's "unique approach to economy air travel is something that Arizona will welcome, as we continue delivering on our promise of making flying better."

Chad Makovsky, aviation department director, City of Phoenix, said, “We are pleased to welcome Porter Airlines to Phoenix. Porter brings an exclusive type of product to our market, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our ties with Canada. Canada continues to be a vital economic partner for our state, and we are eager to welcome more Canadians to experience Arizona."

Lisa Urias, director, Arizona Office of Tourism, “Porter Airlines’ new route from Toronto to Phoenix is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Arizona as an all-season destination to Canadians. With over 300 sunny days a year and average winter temperatures in the 70s, our state offers the perfect escape for Canadian travelers seeking warmth and adventure.

"This new connection enhances access to Arizona's world-class resorts, outdoor recreation, and diverse cultural experiences, reinforcing our state’s position as a top destination for Canadian visitors,” added Urias.

Zaib Shaikh, Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles, said, “The Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles congratulates Porter Airlines on their new route to Phoenix! With Canada being Arizona’s number one international investor and number two destination for exports, and $3.8 billion worth of annual two-way trade, this route will support the more than 1 million people that travel between Canada and Arizona every year for business, tourism, academic and cultural collaboration, along with visits to family and friends.”

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
