FARNBOROUGH — On the first day of the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, Airways enjoyed catching up with Mr. Martin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic’s (BT).
We discussed a wide range of topics from the media lounge, from the network to the airline’s IPO. Mr. Gauss has reaffirmed its interest in transatlantic flight.
“Our vision plan is clear: we will fly at least 100 A220-300 by 2030, focusing only on that aircraft type. We are the largest operator of the type, owning more than 10% of the aircraft ever produced," the CEO said.
"It would be easy today to fill an aircraft from Riga to the East Coast, given the high demand. Of course, doing it with the A220 will not be able to achieve that due to its limited range."
"Therefore," Mr. Gauss continued, "another airline would have to provide the flight, either someone in Europe or in the US or Canada, in partnership with airBaltic. As of now, Riga remains the largest hub from where the direct link should be enabled."
airBaltic Future Destinations
"Destinations where we see a significant demand are New York, Washington and Toronto. airBaltic is also able to feed carriers the likes of JetBlue with passengers through our European network.”
“airBaltic remains the market leader in the Baltic states. Our temporary base in Gran Canaria was so successful that allowed us to restart it in 2024. We aim to serve the Nordics, with aircraft not only based in the Baltics.”
One very interesting topic was the resumption of direct connections to Ukraine.
“We were the last airline to leave Ukraine, and once the airspace reopens for commercial flights, we aim to be the first one to fly back. Depending on the geopolitical situation, airBaltic will be back as soon as possible. In size, the Ukrainian market is significantly larger than the Baltic countries combined.”
