Lufthansa City Airlines to Commence A320neo Flights

DALLAS – Lufthansa City Airlines (VL) will commence scheduled flight operations with the Airbus A320neo on June 26, 2024. It is the youngest airline in the Lufthansa Group (LH), which will operate its inaugural flight from Munich (MUC) to Birmingham (BHX) tomorrow.

The inaugural flight VL2508 bound for BHX is scheduled to depart MUC at 09:10 local time. Passengers can look forward to the German carrier’s customary passenger experience, on board the new Airbus A320neo.

The new Airbus A320neo aircraft will be initially deployed on flights to BHX, Düsseldorf (DUS), Cologne (CGN), Hanover (HAJ), and Bremen (BRE).

"Lufthansa City Airlines is committed to successfully positioning itself in the European short and medium-haul segment from Munich and Frankfurt. A major investment in the future that will strengthen Germany as an aviation location and create numerous attractive jobs," says Jens Fehlinger, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines.

Fleet Expansion with Airbus

Lufthansa City Airlines is planning to receive its second aircraft, an Airbus A319 on July 23. From July 27, the A319 will operate scheduled flights to Bordeaux (BOD), Hamburg (HAM) and Berlin (BER). With its planned fleet expansion, VL will add other destinations in Europe to its network and gradually expand its footprint.

Furthermore, VL will expand its fleet with additional aircraft belonging to the Airbus A320 family, as well as the Airbus A220-330 variant. These aircraft are key to VL’s fleet expansion strategy. They will enable the airline to optimize its services out of MUC and Frankfurt (FRA).

After taking delivery of the first five aircraft belonging to the Airbus A320 family, the VL fleet will be expanded to include at least eight more A320neos and A319s in the coming year. Delivery of the 40 new A220s will start in 2026.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
