DALLAS — London Stansted Airport (STN) has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 29 million passengers for the first time in its history. This achievement coincides with the airport's busiest June ever, highlighting its growing importance as a major travel hub.
Stansted welcomed a staggering 2.8 million passengers in June, representing an 8.3% increase compared to the same month last year. This surpasses the previous busiest June in 2019 by a significant 153,000 passengers.
The airport even witnessed its first-ever days exceeding 100,000 passengers in June, with June 28 seeing the third-highest passenger volume in STN’s history at over 100,800.
Operational Efficiency, Diverse Network
Despite the surge in passenger traffic, STN maintained impressive operational performance. Nick Millar, STN’s Operations Director, emphasized that 97% of departing passengers in June cleared security within 15 minutes. The punctuality, combined with the airport's extensive route network is credited for the record-breaking month.
Moreover, several factors fueled the passenger surge in June. The early summer holiday season saw many travelers depart from Stansted, while international visitors also played a role. STN, with its convenient access to 10 German destinations, provided a gateway for English and UK-based fans traveling to cheer on their teams in Euro 2024.
Additionally, the airport's role as a gateway to London and the East of England attracted a substantial number of overseas visitors. Even royalty wasn't absent, as STN welcomed Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako for their UK state visit.
Looking Forward to a Busy Summer
Nick Millar anticipates further growth in passenger numbers as the peak summer travel season approaches. He highlighted the airport's dedication to ensuring a smooth and efficient journey for all passengers, even during peak periods.
With its focus on seamless travel and a diverse route network, STN is poised to play a vital role in facilitating summer travel plans.
