Jetstar Opens Perth Base, Launches Bangkok Service

DALLAS—Jetstar (JQ) has opened a new aircraft and crew base in Perth (PER), Western Australia.

The opening of the new PER base is a significant move for JQ since it enables the Melbourne-based (MEL) budget carrier to expand operations and develop its route network. JQ has also launched a third new service into Southeast Asia from PER. This marks the single biggest expansion for JQ’s PER base.

On September 2, JQ officially opened its new base in PER. JQ aircraft and up to 60 pilots are stationed at PER. In addition, the budget carrier also shifted its domestic services from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 at Perth International Airport.

This enables JQ’s passengers to connect seamlessly between domestic and international services. Passengers can now walk between gates instead of using a shuttle bus between the terminals.

New International Route

From September 6, Jetstar commenced scheduled flights between PER and Bangkok (BKK) in Thailand, its third destination in Southeast Asia. The decision to offer flights to BKK comes after JQ's successful launch of scheduled services between PER and Singapore (SIN) and Phuket (HKT) last month.

This new flight is operated four times weekly, using an Airbus A321neo aircraft seating 232 passengers. The flight schedule is as follows:

  • From Perth: Operating on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, flight JQ 75 departs PER at 14.50 (local time) and arrives in BKK at 20.30 (local time) the same day.
  • From Bangkok: Operating on the same days, JQ 76 departs BKK at 21.55 (local time) and arrives in PER at 05.40 (local time) the following day.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
