FIA2024: IAG Commits to GEnx Engine Purchase

DALLAS — GE Aerospace announced today at FIA2024 that International Airlines Group (IAG) made the commitment to purchase GEnx engines, which will be the first in their fleet, to power six new 787 Dreamliners.

Since going into service in 2011, the GEnx engine family has clocked more than 56 million flight hours. With approximately 3,000 engines in service and on backlog, including spares, it is the fastest-selling, high-thrust engine in GE Aerospace history. Two of every three operational 787 airplanes are powered by the GEnx-1B, according to GE Aerospace.

The engine manufacturer states that the GEnx engine saves 1.4% on fuel consumption for the average Dreamliner mission as compared to competitors. The GEnx engine can also currently run on authorized blends of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Currently, British Airways (BA) uses GE Aerospace's GE90, CF34, and LEAP engines to power its aircraft.

Comments from GE Aerospace, IAG

"British Airways was the launch customer for the highly successful GE90 engine. Bringing the GEnx into their 787 fleet represents another important milestone in our relationship," said Russell Stokes, President and CEO, Commercial Engines and Services, GE Aerospace.

"The GEnx engine is performing well with millions of reliable flight hours under wing and proven fuel efficiency and economics," IAG said. "This selection by IAG and British Airways affirms the confidence we have in the GEnx engine and 787 aircraft combination."

Just prior to FIA2024, the global aerospace propulsion, services, and systems company announced plans to invest more than US$1 billion over five years in its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) and component repair facilities worldwide.

Ahead of FIA2024, GE Aerospace competitor Rolls-Royce announced it was preparing to introduce an upgraded version of its Trent XWB-84 turbofan engine expected to deliver "a 1% improvement in fuel burn efficiency for the Airbus A350-900 airliner" while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and competitor Rolls-Royce announced they were collaborating "to advance research into hydrogen fuel system technology."

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
