DALLAS – Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) has reported a strong performance for the second quarter of 2024, with passenger and cargo movements nearing pre-pandemic levels. The airport handled 16.5 million passenger movements from April to June, marking a 13.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Notably, this figure represents 98.2% of passenger movements recorded in the second quarter of 2019. Moreover, aircraft movements during the same period totaled 89,300, reflecting a 9.7% year-on-year increase and reaching 94.5% of pre-pandemic levels.
Changi Airport's top five markets for the second quarter were Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Australia, and India. China witnessed the most significant growth, with passenger traffic doubling compared to the previous year and surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The broader North Asia region also experienced a growth, registering a 40.8% year-on-year increase.
Cargo Operations Thrive, Future Outlook
Cargo operations also saw robust growth, surpassing the same period in 2023 by 16% to reach 486,000 tonnes. This uptick was driven by growth across all cargo flows, including exports, imports, and transhipments. China and the United States emerged as SIN’s top air cargo markets.
Lim Ching Kiat, Changi Airport Group's Executive Vice President for Air Hub and Cargo Development, expressed optimism about the airport's performance, stating, “Changi Airport continues to expand its global network, having added more flights in the second quarter. Travellers can now explore more destinations with Changi’s connectivity to cities such as Broome, Brussels, Quanzhou, and Vancouver, and enjoy more options to evergreen favourites like Tokyo and London. Together with our airline partners, we are striving towards full travel recovery by the end of this year.”
With 94 airlines operating over 6,900 weekly scheduled flights, SIN connects Singapore to 158 cities across 50 countries and territories. The airport aims to recover full travel by the year's end.
