Brussels Airlines Wants You to Design Its Next Livery

DALLAS It is rare to see airlines handing this enormous power to the public, but it always works out great. The flag carrier of Belgium, Brussels Airlines (SN), will allow its customers and enthusiasts to design and vote for their next “Belgian Icon” special livery through a public contest.

The carrier launched the contest today, August 27. Participants will have up to one month to submit their proposals to the airline, which aims to represent the best aspects of Belgium. Afterward, a general vote will be held at the beginning of October, deciding the winner's design to be featured in an Airbus A320 family aircraft.

The Head of Marketing of SN, Michel Moriaux, said, “The design has to be something Belgium is known for, and Belgians are proud of, without entering too much into clichés. As with all our previous Belgian Icons, the design must have a “wow-factor” and inspire people to visit Belgium.”

If you live in Europe, it’s difficult not to spot any of the Belgian Icon series of special liveries across all Brussels Airlines' medium-haul destinations. This creative project began in 2015 with the introduction of the first scheme, “Rackham,” which pays tribute to Tintin, the world-famous Belgian comic.

Through the years, SN has applied colorful designs to various other Airbus A320 family jets in the fleet, including “Magritte” and “Aerosmurf.”

As of today, two special liveries have already been freshened up with the new logo and brand: “Amare” and the “Red Devils.”

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
