Avianca Adds Fort Lauderdale-Managua Daily Route

DALLAS — Avianca (AV) rolls out a new daily nonstop flight connecting Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Managua, Nicaragua.

Flights begin on May 10, 2025, and AV will operate the route with its Airbus A320, providing more than 2,500 seats each week between the two capitals. The added route expands AV's reach in South Florida and backs its routes to Bogotá (BOG) and Medellín (MDE).

Increasing U.S.-Nicaragua Connectivity

The route will be more convenient for commuters between Nicaragua and South Florida. Daily flights will give passengers greater flexibility to AV's large Latin American network.

The carrier’s A320 jets can seat up to 180 passengers. This expansion is part of its overall strategy to increase connectivity between Latin America and the U.S.

Rolando Damas, AV's Director of Sales of North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe, commented on the importance of this new service:

“Avianca is committed to further increasing its network, thus providing travelers more choices. Our introduction of the new route from Fort Lauderdale to Managua is proof of our commitment to linking strategic markets and making the finest travel destinations in Latin America accessible.”

Flight Schedule, Service Information

Avianca will launch a new route between Managua and Fort Lauderdale on May 10, 2025. Flight AV446 will depart from Managua at 10:00 a.m. local time and arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 2:35 p.m. The return flight, AV447, will depart from Fort Lauderdale at 4:40 p.m. local time and return to Managua.

Opening this route will give travelers in the Americas a consistent experience, especially business travelers who need improved access to Managua and Nicaraguans residing in South Florida.

Strengthening the U.S.-Latin America Network

The FLL-MGA route is part of AV's broader expansion of operations in the U.S. in 2025. The airline also plans to launch routes to El Salvador and Colombia, expanding its presence throughout core U.S. markets.

Other new routes to the U.S. in 2025 include:

  • Dallas (DFW) to Bogotá (BOG): From May 26, 2025, the flight will run four times a week using Airbus A320 planes with an additional 1,440 seats weekly.
  • Chicago (ORD) to San Salvador (SAL): Beginning June 3, 2025, AV will increase the three-times-a-week route from the Midwest region to Central America.

Florida's Rising Role in AV's Expansion

Avianca has already identified Florida as a primary gateway for Latin American tourists, confirming its role by increasing its routes. Previously, in 2025, the airline revealed new Florida services due to start next March:

  • Tampa (TPA) to Bogotá (BOG) – Four weekly flights.
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Medellín (MDE) – Daily flights.
  • Miami (MIA) to San José (SJO) – Daily flights.

Competitive Landscape, Market Impact

The new FLL-MGA route pits AV against Spirit Airlines (NK), which also flies this route. However, AV's full-service approach differentiates it from NK's ultra-low-cost budget service.

Avianca's steady growth proves its strategic focus on bridging the Americas. With 150 routes, 700 daily frequencies, and a 140-strong aircraft fleet connecting over 75 cities across 25+ countries, AV is a top carrier in Latin America.

As it solidifies its place in the U.S.-Latin America air transportation market, AV invests in offering more significant business and leisure travel opportunities.
