DALLAS — According to analytics firm Cirium, August 2024 was marked by strong on-time performance (OTP) across global airports, with improvements seen in many regions.
Global Overview
Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) claimed the top spot in the global ranking, with an OTP of 84.33%, a significant improvement from 78.33% in July.
Other high-performing airports included Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH), which came in second place with an OTP of 83.11%, and São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), which came in third with an OTP of 83.00%.
Regional Performance
Large Airports: Honolulu International Airport (HNL) took first place in the large airport category with an OTP of 87.20%, followed by Mexico City and Riyadh. Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) also showed strong performance, with an OTP of 82.89%.
Medium Airports: Panama City Tocumen International Airport (PTY) led the medium airport category with an impressive OTP of 92.68%, a notable increase from July’s 86.38%. Brasilia International Airport (BSB) and Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) followed closely with OTPs of 90.69% and 88.27%, respectively.
Small Airports: Guayaquil Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) topped the small airport category with a 90.83% OTP. Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) and Trondheim Airport (TRD) also delivered strong results, with OTPs of 90.82% and 90.07%, respectively.
Flight Cancellations
Globally, flight cancellations decreased by 5% compared to July, with Europe and North America showing the most significant reductions. However, Latin America saw a slight increase in cancellations.
August 2024 was a strong month for airport on-time performance, with many airports achieving high OTP percentages. Airports in Mexico City, Panama City, and Honolulu were leaders in their respective categories, contributing to smoother travel experiences worldwide.
