DALLAS — Alaska Airlines (AS) is celebrating the opening of Portland International Airport's (PDX) newly renovated terminal by introducing innovative technology to streamline the passenger experience.
The carrier aims to move travelers from the lobby to security in five minutes or less, marking PDX as the first location to implement these advancements.
The airline's new system focuses on providing passengers greater autonomy throughout their journey. A key feature is the custom-designed, iPad-powered bag tag stations that print luggage tags by scanning a mobile boarding pass.
Alaska has partnered with Embross, a self-service technology specialist, to develop Automated Bag Drop stations. These stations scan and accept checked baggage and securely verify travelers' identities against government-issued IDs without agent intervention.

Charu Jain, senior vice president of innovation and merchandising at Alaska Airlines, said, "With nearly 90% of our passengers now checking in before they arrive at the airport, we've launched our lobby of the future experience in Portland which simplifies dropping off bags and gets guests quickly through the lobby so they can enjoy everything the new terminal has to offer."
Embross' Chief Technology Officer, Myles Tzelepis, emphasized that the new bag drop experience at PDX utilizes cutting-edge computer vision technology. This innovation ensures convenience and efficiency in automated bag processing while maintaining compliance with TSA ID-check requirements and passenger safety standards.
This technological overhaul at AS' second largest hub represents the carrier's commitment to enhancing the airport experience, giving passengers more control over their travel process, and reducing time spent in queues, something any airline passenger can appreciate.
