DALLAS — Air India (AI) will cancel around 60 scheduled flights to various destinations in the United States due to delayed aircraft returns after heavy maintenance.
The Tata Group-owned carrier has canceled almost 60 flights to the United States during the upcoming peak season. The cancellations come during the busy holiday season when demand for US travel typically increases.
The airline has canceled several flights to destinations including San Francisco (SFO), Washington (WAS), Chicago (CHI), Newark (EWR), and New York (NYC) from November 15 to December 31.
Impacted by Maintenance Issues
These cancellations result from aircraft shortages at the Indian airline, which are caused by delays in maintenance servicing. Mostly, flights operated by AI’s widebody aircraft are affected. This includes Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft. Affected routes include:
- 14 flights on the Delhi-Chicago route
- 28 flights on the Delhi-Washington route
- 12 flights on the Delhi-San Francisco route
- Four flights on the Mumbai-New York route
- Two flights on the Delhi-Newark route
That said, AI is not the only airline facing this challenge. Other airlines, such as Malaysia’s flag carrier Malaysia Airlines (MH) have also canceled several flights, having to ground aircraft for engine changes and regular maintenance.
As of October 30, the airline is working to resolve the situation caused by this issue and minimize disruptions for passengers. The airline says it will inform customers impacted by these flight cancellations.
To accommodate affected travelers, AI will offer alternatives, including rebooking on other Air India group flights, complimentary date changes, or full refunds.
