PAN AM: Celebrating the 45th anniversary of US commercial jet service
October 2003 marks the 45th anniversary of the launch of scheduled passenger jet service by a US air carrier—Pan American World Airways. Pan Am ceased operations a dozen years ago, but such is its legacy that there are few facets of the industry that ‘The World’s Most Experienced Airline’ left untouched.
Our tribute to Pan American focuses largely on the postwar era, although no publication about Pan Am could fail to mention the magnificent ‘Clipper’ flying boats (see The Fate of the Martin Boys and Clipper Training).
Other topics include: The Chosen Instrument, a pictorial overview of the last 45 years or so of Pan Am’s accomplishments, touching on some little-known aspects of its operations; Pan Am’s inaugural jet service in 1958 and the airline’s spectacular reenactment of that flight 25 years later; Death of a Grand Lady, a poignant first-hand account of a captain’s last flight with the airline; the Pan American Historical Foundation; the career of Boeing 747 Clipper Juan T. Trippe; and the Lockerbie Memorial.
